Water softeners in Gardendale
Help for homes on wells and small water systems in the growing community north of Odessa.
Gardendale is an unincorporated community in northeastern Ector County, about 14 miles north of downtown Odessa, with State Highway 158 along its northern edge. It grew from 1,574 people in 2010 to 2,020 in 2020, with homes on large lots spread across flat ranch land between Odessa and Midland.
No city water department
Because Gardendale isn't an incorporated city, there's no municipal water utility. Homes are served by small water systems or their own private wells. If you're on a system, its annual Consumer Confidence Report lists what it found in testing. If you're on a well, nobody tests it unless you do.
Testing a Gardendale well
The Texas Tribune reported in 2024 that officials were concerned about naturally occurring arsenic in some of the roughly 13,500 private wells in Ector and Midland counties, and that individual well testing can cost up to $400, according to the Texas Water Development Board. Texas A&M AgriLife has offered lower-cost screenings in the two counties for arsenic, E. coli, nitrate and salt levels. Test for hardness and dissolved solids too, so the softener and any RO system are sized right.
What well systems here often include
- Sediment filtration to protect the softener
- A softener sized for hard, high-mineral water
- RO at the kitchen sink for drinking and cooking
- Disinfection if bacteria turn up
Equipment usually goes in a garage, pump house or shed near the pressure tank. Ask the company about protecting it from summer heat and winter freezes.
